This meteorite, discovered in 1974 close to South Australia’s Brachina Gorge, was named for the location where it fell. Although scientists didn’t know of any other meteorites with a composition similar to Brachina until this one was found, there are now 56 known as “brachinite” meteorites. Olivine is the most common mineral in brachinites, although pyroxene, plagioclase, and iron sulfide are also present. Brachinites are formed during volcanic eruptions. They learn about the early Solar System asteroids’ geological evolution from this unusual and scientifically significant group of meteorites.
